TongRo-How-to: For Your Better Geotagging

The number of subscriptions for images taken outdoors, such as Korean scenic spots that show the beauty of the four seasons, worldwide tour spots, and ‘cool’ places with liveliness, is largely proportional to the accuracy of location information. For example, Jirisan Mountain, Mudeungsan Mountain, and Ungilsan Mountain, the well-known fall foliage places in South Korea, images with clear keywords recorded higher search exposure and downloads than images that did not.

However, there could be cases where you can't remember the place's exact location after finishing your shooting. How can we prevent this situation in advance? In this article, we would like to introduce a way to capture accurate location information when shooting outdoors in two cases: a mobile phone and a digital camera.

[In Case of Using Mobile Phones]

Most recently released mobile phones can capture the shooting date and location of photos and videos. For Samsung users, turn on the camera and enable the ‘Location Tagging’ feature in the settings. For iPhone users, check ‘Location Services’ of ‘Camera’ under ‘Privacy & Security’ on ‘Settings’, you can check the location of the place in the gallery in the future.

[In Case of Using Digital Camera]

Geotagging, a technology that records the location information of photos or videos taken by a DSLR camera, can be largely applied in two ways: using a smartphone application provided by the camera manufacturer or an external GPS receiver. However, this technology is only available in some brands’ products such as Sony, Nikon, Canon, and others.

Latitude, longitude, altitude, and time are automatically saved in photos and videos with the geotagging feature. You can search for this information online, such as Google Maps.

Therefore, when taking outdoor photos with DSLR cameras, first check whether your camera supports geotagging. Otherwise, you can capture accurate location information by activating your smartphone for future reference. This simple trick will help you generate better subscriptions!

If your images contain a recognizable face, a model release must be submitted together with the images. In addition, if your images contain a place, an object, pets, or other properties that require consent from ownership, copyright holders, or property rights holders to use them, a property release must be submitted with the images. Not submitting such releases may result in content rejection by the editor.
